Mapping the Path Together: Community Consultations Begin
Listening Circle" (Social Foundation): True sustainability isn't built with concrete; it’s built with conversation. This week, the Naretunoi team held the first 'Listening Circle' at the Hippo Pool with our local women’s artisan groups. Even with limited resources, our most valuable asset is our shared vision. We spent the day mapping out the exact locations for the future workstations to ensure the best natural shade and the most welcoming flow for visitors crossing the future bridge. By involving the artisans in the design phase now, we ensure that when the first stone is laid, the Hub is already 'theirs.' We are currently finalizing the social impact framework to ensure that every household—especially those furthest from the main gate—has an equal opportunity to benefit from this new gateway.
Respecting the Flow: Environmental Scoping at the Hippo Pool
Before we build, we listen to the land. We have begun the soft-scoping phase of the Hippo Pool Bridge project, focusing on the seasonal behavior of the Athi River. Our focus is on a 'Light-Touch' engineering approach. We are researching local, sustainable materials that blend into the landscape and minimize the carbon footprint of the construction. This stage is vital for building trust with both the environment and our supporters; we aren't just building a bridge to move people, we are building a crossing that respects the hippo pods and the river’s natural pulse. Understanding these ecological patterns now prevents future maintenance costs and ensures the safety of every tourist and herder who will eventually use this path. We are turning limited resources into precise planning.
The Reality on the Ground: A Broken Gateway
This is the current state of the crossing at the Hippo Pool. What was once a simple path for the community is now a collapsed metal structure, cutting off the safe passage between the National Park and Naretunoi. For our artisans, this isn''t just a broken bridge—it is a broken economy. Every day this structure remains in the river, local households lose direct access to visitors. Our scoping phase is now more critical than ever as we move from documenting the damage to designing a resilient, flood-proof replacement that restores this vital link.
